this country is a desert

This country is a desert.
The sky so bright it's like an explosion, the air so hot it's like a fog.
The streets wilt and bend and dogs seek the shade and nothing grows.
Nothing ever grows.
Seeds planted by kids and swivel eyed idealists shrivel in infertile seeming earth and ideas are cut down before they can burst and shriek into the wind but the land is rich.
The land is so rich.
Potential lurks and lingers and resists the herbicides and pesticides, the withering glances and the callous indifference and waits for the rains.
It waits for the storms.
And the storms, eventually, always come.
And nothing, and no one can stand against them.
No wealth will protect you, no privilege will elevate you and no birthright will hold your head above the waves.
But the earth, like it always has, will sip and swallow and swell and with a long fecund eruption will torrent and spew until it's empty.
The seeds will burst and root and there will be blooms.
The desert will glow and you will be sorry.

Life In A Police State (a taste provided with all the courtesy of a western country, paranoid and deluded)
i cannot imagine
the sound of helicopters
day and night
like a grey fog
humming
reminding
“this is not your city.”
“you have no control.”
“ yes you live and struggle and love and die. but you do it because i allow it. you do it at my whim.
do not enrage me. do not taunt me. do not mock me. or i will swoop down and destroy you.”
“i can vanish those that you love.”
“i can make them scream for hours.”
“i can erase them from their bodies, never to return.”
“just go about your business.”
“but never forget."
and the helicopters
like huge, angry birds
soar
and are never still

and the curlews screamed

and the curlews screamed
because the storm was leaving
and there would be a space
that would be hard to fill
and the air was cold and my skin was alive
your howls echoing through
my neighbourhood as old ladies came to their front door
and idiot boys stepped up like heroes
encouraged by your simpering
and titillated by your need
and you continued your frenzied dance
and the curlews cried
and where
i would have imagined
the air
would rush in with a mighty clap
and stun
and spifflicate and terrorise
instead
there was a sigh
and a slow deliquescing
and the curlews bawled
and you were gone

i am a warrior poet

i am a warrior poet
i create beauty as i slay
i slay ignorance, calumny and excess
my art will make you weep
i am strong and gentle
i am violent and beautiful
i am a warrior poet
i will realise this more than anything else in my universe
i desire this more than sex, than companionship, than food or water.
i am desire
i am lust
i am terrible and tall
astride the land i am a giant
above the sky i am a planet
beyond all reason i am a god
i am a warrior poet
